Bronze Medal Glory for Komal Kohar on opening day of 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships

The 2026 Asian Senior Weightlifting Championships commenced on 11 May 2026 at the prestigious Mahatma Mandir & Exhibition Centre, Gandhinagar with participation from 28 Asian nations and 2 Commonwealth nations – a qualifying event for 2026 Commonwealth Games. The Championship has brought together 178 elite athletes from across the continent, marking one of the most significant sporting events hosted in India this year.

India celebrated a proud and historic beginning to the championships as Komal Kohar secured a Bronze Medal in the Women’s 48 kg weight category becoming one of the first Indian women lifters to achieve a podium finish at the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships in recent years.

The Gold and Silver Medals in the Women’s 48 kg category were claimed by athletes from Chinese Taipei, while Un Chol Pang from DPR Korea dominated the Men’s 60 kg category and also created new World and Asian Records in the Clean & Jerk event with a lift of 174 kg, underlining the extraordinary standard of competition witnessed on the opening day of the Championships.
