Ahmedabad, August 25, 2025:- The 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships commenced with grandeur at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex, Ahmedabad. The opening ceremony, held on 24th August 2025 at 5:30 p.m., was graced by distinguished dignitaries, including the Union Cabinet Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, the State Sports Minister of Gujarat, the President of the International Weightlifting Federation, the President and General Secretary of the Commonwealth Weightlifting Federation, and the General Secretary of the Asian Weightlifting Federation.
The Championship has brought together a powerful contingent of 290 athletes from 30 Commonwealth countries, supported by 100 team officials, 50 International Technical Officials, over 200 volunteers, and 30 high-level delegates from Indian ministries and government bodies.
Day 1 of Competition – Indian Lifters Shine Bright
The competition officially began on 25th August 2025 at 9:00 a.m., with India’s youth athletes setting the stage on fire and rewriting Commonwealth records.

- Maharajan (India) secured double gold in both Youth Boys and Junior Men’s 60 kg categories with consistent lifts.

- Malaysia and Sri Lanka also stood out with strong podium finishes in the senior category.
A Historic Start
The first day of the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships showcased India’s rising dominance in the sport, with athletes across youth, junior, and senior divisions delivering record-breaking performances. With electrifying support from the home crowd, the Championships promise to be a milestone in the global weightlifting arena.
Mr. Sahdev Yadav, President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the Indian athletes and coaches for delivering a remarkable performance on the opening day of the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
He expressed pride that the Championships are being graciously hosted by the Indian Weightlifting Federation, with the valued support of the Sports Authority of Gujarat and the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India.
Welcoming athletes, coaches, and support staff from across the Commonwealth, Mr. Yadav remarked:
