TOKYO, JAPAN, 24th July 2021, Saturday: – TEAM INDIA opened its medal count at 32nd Summer Olympic Games at Tokyo on 24th July 2021 as Padamshree Saikhom Mirabai Chanu entered in the History books with scintillating performance on 24th July 2021 by showcasing her talent and secured SILVER MEDAL with a lift of 202 kg in 49 kg weight category. She bettered the weightlifting record at Olympic Games created by Karnam Malleswari in Sydney 2000 Olympic Games who had a BRONZE MEDAL.
Her first lift in snatch was 84 kg followed by 87 kg in second and 89 kg in third attempts which went unsuccessful. Adding over from snatch event, she lifted 110 kg, 115 kg in clean & jerk and 117 kg in third attempt which went unsuccessful, finally making a total of 202 kg.
A crisp performance by the Indian athlete has created History for Indian weightlifters. Raising the Indian Flag high on the victory podium and giving impetus to the hopes of other medal contenders of India.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (born 8 August 1994) is an Indian weightlifter. A regular presence in international events since 2014 in the 48 kg category, Chanu has won the World Championships and multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions to the sport. She was awarded Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards by the Government of India for year 2018.
